SHERIFF MIKE KNOEDL - WEEKLY UPDATE 08/30/2024

Writer's picture: Mike KnoedlMike Knoedl

I hope everyone is preparing to enjoy the last big holiday of the summer. Whatever your plans are, please be safe, relax, and enjoy time with family and friends.

Deputies continue to work on the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign this week. We have made two DWI arrests, and several drug arrests related to this effort. Unfortunately, we assisted the Arkansas State Police in working a fatality accident. I am asking for continued prayers for the victim involved in this accident. Expect DWI checkpoints and stepped-up law enforcement efforts through the holiday weekend. Please be patient with officers if you encounter a DWI checkpoint. Our primary goal is to detect impaired drivers while inspecting licenses and registrations and have you on your way as quickly as possible.

While we're on the topic of Sobriety Checkpoints, it has been brought to my attention on various posts on social media that checkpoints are unconstitutional. Having been in law enforcement for close to 40 years now, I would never knowingly do anything unconstitutional or violate someone's rights. I urge you to research the case law concerning DWI checkpoints, specifically the "Sitz" decision. This should give the Google Lawyers out there a place to start.

I frequently report on our progress in serving outstanding warrants. During July, we served numerous warrants and collected bonds and fines in the amount of $47,098.47. During that same month, we collected $153,342.19 for holding federal and out-of-county inmates. So far this year, we have collected $1,059,380.20 and turned over $345,450.94 back into county general. It is important to me to let everyone know where money is spent and taken in by our county Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Rucker and crew started the week picking up trash on Highway 9 & 273 to the county line. Trash Pickup from Holly Springs to Sparkman on Hwy 128 was completed. They've mowed the Senior Center and painted the front office of the Chamber of Commerce building. They cleaned around several dumpsters during this week. Routine maintenance was performed around the detention facility on various equipment and the yards. They will be picking up trash on Saturdays at the football fields after Friday night games.
